My friends,
N: Where were you born?

Emanative : I was born in Sussex...roughly half-way in between London and Brighton (on the south coast)
N: Who were your heroes as a child?
Emanative: heroes as a child...was into lots of sci-fi, most of the Star Wars characters I guess, definately Yoda!

N : What were your parents listening to?
Emanative : Lot's of different stuff, they were mainly into the rock side of things!
With my dad being one of David Bowie's Spiders From Mars, he was into Zeppelin, Hendrix and Cream - for the drummers, but also drummers like Gene Krupa, Louie Bellson and Buddy Rich...I think Gene Krupa in particular for his very simplistic and highly communicative style of approach to the drums, he used to play them in an almost melodic way - tuning the toms very well to actual notes.
My mum likes the same, plus a little bit of Sly and the Family Stone, and I even remember her coming back from L.A. once with a Biz Markie tape that she liked!! You could say that they're not really into Jazz!

N: What are your musical influences? the artists you admire?
Emanative : That's a tough one because I'm into EVERYTHING, and in a BIG way!! It might be easier to tell you some artists that inspired me for this particular album...like for example Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, Yusef Lateef, through to Marcus Belgrave and of course Sun Ra. But also Madlib, Flying Lotus, Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and all that stuff. I was really into Marvin Gaye's – “Trouble Man” album, very cinematic, with tons of soul and jazz, and I believe he played the drums on it too.
N: How long have you been playing instruments such as drums? Why drums?
Emanative : I've been playing since I was very young! My choice might have something to do with the fact that there was always a lovely kit set up in the studio when I was a kid...courtesy of the old man. He would play acoustic guitar and I would play along on the drums bashing out some heavy beats! Cute eh?
N : Did your parents recognise your nascent talent as a musician?
Emanative : Yeah, a very musical household...a very arty family! Always backed up 100% by my folks, very lucky for that.
N : Were your parents happy with your decision to embrace music as a career?
Emanative : Yeah definitely, but to be honest I'd have been encouraged in whatever I decided to do.
N : When led you to your professional start?
Emanative : Professional...you mean making money and stuff? Ha ha ha! I'll tell you when it starts ; )
N: How did you become a musician, and then a producer?
Emanative : I Played in many bands over the years, and always found myself involved in more than just the drumming.
But the main aspect really is that I was always and still am, very much an artist. I always wanted to put out some of my concepts into the world - by any means necessary!! I wanted more creative input.
But it took a long time until I took on that responsibility. Didn't think I could be a producer. It seemed a little austere and complicated. I've been lucky enough to work with some seriously cool cats on this album, and it's been a very healthy experience for me, and I've got some good ideas for the future.
N : How do you perceive yourself? as a musician, artist, producer? craftsman? and why?
Emanative : A soul pilot, an astronaut, a philosopher, an artist, musician and producer. Whatever I decide to be.
N : Laughing ! I like that!
N: Now, what is your relationship to music?
Emanative : Married!
N: Can You describe your style to the people who may not know your work?
Emanative : A Jazz record from a hip-hop perspective. I've heard people calling it "Space Jazz".
N: I like this concept “Space Jazz” !
N: If I have understood, you were noticed by Gilles Peterson thanks to the tracks "Petite Planète" and "When on Earth", right?
Emanative : For sure, but prior to that it was "Turn Your Lights On" feat' Ahu which he was digging first...he put it on his Brownswood Bubblers 3 compilation.
N: When was that?
Emanative : That came out last year.
N: Can you tell us the whole story?
Emanative : Simon S. of Futuristica Music played it to Gilles, as did Ahu I believe. He played it on the radio a few times back then and really went nuts for it, which was great feedback for me and really meant a lot. Thank you Mr GP!! Then he wanted it included in his selection for the Brownswood Bubblers album.
It was the first actual Emanative release!!

N : Was this a major change for you?
Emanative :Yeah, it opened the door for some cool and very positive things to start happening.
N : I can imagine that it brought you more confidence to be persistent in your quest for being a respected producer.
Emanative : Definitely!!
N: To be honest, I've been listening to your music for a long time. I was often checking Futuristica Music Label. Obviously, I heard your tracks on "Worldwide Show" I was amazed at the name you've chosen "EMANATIVE"
Emanative : Thanks!!
N: Why have you chosen this name? I always felt that "Emanative" had a futuristic quality, something aeral. What do you think?
Emanative : Pronounced “Em-uh-nayt-iv”. Seems like a simple word to me but some people really struggle with it...maybe they don't understand it's meaning?
It has a kind of spiritual vibe to it, emanating from a source point like you do as a spirit or soul.
N: Yes. Your album "Space" has been released this year in May on Futuristica Music Label. Can you describe the project in a few words? What was your vision of this work? Are you satisfied with it?
Emanative: Well, that's hard one to answer quickly.
It obviously has a theme to it, Space, it could be outer space, or your own spiritual space or whatever you want it to be? Your home universe, the pathways to it and the various traps in life that stop you from 'getting the girl and killing the bad guys'.

And, yeah I'm happy with it - excited about the next one and also about taking Emanative out as a live band!!
N : What are your favourite tracks?
Emanative : I really like this album as a whole story, so I don't really have a favourite.
N : It has been ages I've heard such a sound... the arrangements.. so surreal.. cosmic... spacey... like Sun Ra! The album is reminiscent of spiritual jazz albums!
Emanative : I think it IS a spiritual jazz album, but designed for NOW!! A post hip-hop perspective on all that wealth of spiritual soul and jazz - approaching it from a hip-hop mentality.
N : And what about the cover?
Emanative : That piece was done by Gene Starship of Heavyweight. (HVW8.COM) It's titled "Low Motion" which is what inspired the track of the same name.
He also did some art on the inner sleeve which is amazing too. The piece on the back, which I also used for the 7" vinyl of “When On Earth”, was done by Miss Carrie May. You need to check both of these artists out for sure.
N : "We Travel the Spacebeats " and "Low Motion" are my favourite tracks!
Emanative : Cosmic funk and hip-hop! Cool, thanks a lot!
N : Can you explain us what inspires you to create these melodies?
Emanative : It took some amazing musicians, some vintage gear and some time well spent in the Emanative studio!! A combination of live playing and studio production.
N : Do you have any interesting project in the future, any collaborations?
Emanative : Well, there's the “Spacebeats” E.P. released now in November, with remixes of “When On Earth” by Tony Nwachukwu & Marc Rapson as well as “We Travel The Spacebeats” from the album and my version of Coltrane's “Naima”.

Then there is a remix album called “TIME” - (REMIXES FROM SPACE) in 2010 which will include various remixes, instrumentals and versions of tracks from “SPACE”. I'm quite excited about it.
N : Ok.For instance, who do you want to collaborate with? ( singers, producers....)
Emanative : I'd love to work with some male vocalists in the vain of Andy Bey, Dwight Trible or Terry Callier. To be honest there are tons of people I'd love to collaborate with. I'm interested in the idea of doing an Emanative soundtrack to a nonexistent film!
Be nice to work on something with Marc Mac...be amazing to produce an album for Pharoah Sanders, be fun to play drums for Dorian Concept......... I'd like to produce something for my wife Liz Elensky next, and maybe involve Carina Andersson and Cecilia Stalin (three swede's!)

N : Interesting!
N : What about the Live performance? I may believe that you played live in London a few months ago?
Emanative : I wish we had, but sadly no...that was just an Emanative DJ selection for the album launch party. I would love to do it live, but we'll have to see. I'd really love to get this together.
N : what do ou mean by a live band? Do you want to create something similar to Sun Ra?
Emanative: Yeah sure! I want to go out with a tribe of musicians to perform versions of this material, but slightly more improvised. hopefully get it together early next year
N. In general, what is the "nujazz" scene in London?
Emanative : I don't really know....I mainly stay tuned to my label Futuristica Music, Simon.S and Deborah Jordan and all the other guys on the label, then there's CD-R/Burntprogress - the night run by Tony Nwachukwu and Gavin Alexander for all producers and artists to hang and play new tunes, mixes and edits on a state of the art sound system, and then of course there are d.j.'s like Gilles Peterson, Dom Servini and Kev Beadle etc...
I think that's all

N: To finish : who do you recommand to check as new artists or musicians?
Emanative : Marc Rapson (Futuristica) amazing Marvin edits, remixes, including a nice remix for my "When On Earth" and much more to come from him next year.
Mathew Halsall - Trumpeter extraordinaire, serious modal jazz vibes.
N : Thanks a lot!
